New Delhi:
A video showing a woman tying the end (pallu) of her saree to the engine of a stationary train and dancing on the railway tracks has gone viral on social media, drawing widespread backlash from netizens over the extreme risks individuals take to gain views and likes.
The performance, which appeared to mimic a dramatic romantic sequence from a Bollywood movie, has raised serious safety concerns regarding trespassing on active railway properties.
Incident Details
- Stunt on Railway Tracks: In the widely shared clip, a woman dressed in a saree and sunglasses is seen standing on the tracks alongside a halted train. She secures the loose end of her saree directly to the locomotive.
- Bollywood-Style Performance: After knotting the saree to the engine, she steps forward facing the camera, lip-syncing to a song while gesturing toward the train and dancing.
- Severe Safety Hazards: While the locomotive appears stationary during the shoot, filming in close proximity to railway equipment and standing on operational tracks pose severe hazards of sudden movement, electrocution from overhead lines, or passing traffic on adjacent tracks.
Social Media Backlash & Online Reaction
The footage drew sharp rebukes from social media users, who condemned the growing trend of compromising personal safety and public decorum for online engagement:
- Criticism of 'Social Bankruptcy': One widely shared post on X highlighted the clip, remarking: "The race to make reels is bankrupting people not just mentally, but socially. For a few likes and views, people are gambling away their common sense, shame, and responsibility. The moment the camera turns on, human reasoning turns off."
- Calls for Legal Action: Numerous users tagged railway authorities, demanding an inquiry and strict penalties against the creator for trespassing and tampering with railway rolling stock.
- Debate on Repercussions: Commentators questioned the increasing normalization of filming disruptive stunts, dances, and reels inside coaches, on platforms, and across railway lines.
Violation of Railway Regulations
Trespassing on railway tracks, loitering around tracks, and unauthorized interference with railway equipment constitute punishable offences under the Railway Act. Despite continuous advisories and warnings issued by Indian Railways, hazardous stunts filmed for social media visibility continue to remain a significant safety concern.
