Belagavi:
A domestic argument over a trivial issue escalated into violence, resulting in a man allegedly beating his 26-year-old wife to death in Belagavi's Hanuman Nagar on Tuesday night. The accused husband has been taken into custody by the APMC police.
The deceased has been identified as Ashwini Hegde (26). Her husband, Vittal Hegde, has been arrested in connection with the crime.
Incident Details
Originally hailing from Bailhongal taluk, Vittal had moved to Belagavi for work, where he earned a living as a painter, while Ashwini worked as a domestic help. The couple resided in Hanuman Nagar along with their two young children and Vittal's elderly parents.
According to family members and police, the couple had a history of frequent arguments triggered by suspicion and minor disputes. On Tuesday night, amid the Dasara festival, another dispute erupted between the two. The argument turned violent when Vittal severely assaulted Ashwini. She sustained grievous injuries and succumbed on the way to the hospital.
Mother Recounts Phone Call Before Tragedy
Speaking to reporters, Ashwini's mother, Kallavva, recounted the horrifying moments preceding her daughter's death:
"My daughter had visited our parental home for the Dasara festival. However, she returned after her husband claimed that her father-in-law was seriously ill. When I called her last night, she said she was feeding her child. Suddenly, I heard her scream on the call. We initially feared her father-in-law had passed away. But when we rushed here, we found out that my daughter had been murdered. Ever since their marriage, he harbored unnecessary suspicion, subjected her to physical abuse, and sent her back to our home. Each time, we counseled her to return and maintain her family. Now, my son-in-law has killed my daughter, leaving her two small children orphaned."
The APMC police visited the crime scene, conducted an inquest, and arrested Vittal Hegde. A case of murder has been registered, and further investigation is underway.
