A video capturing a couple absorbed in filming a romantic beach video while their unsupervised toddler was nearly swept away by ocean waves has sparked widespread outrage across social media.
The clip, shared on X (formerly Twitter) by user "BellamSwathi," quickly went viral, surpassing 51,000 views and drawing sharp criticism regarding the parents' negligence.
The Incident
The recording shows a couple strolling hand-in-hand along the shoreline, recording a selfie-style video for social media. In the process, they left their toddler trailing behind near the incoming tide.
As a strong wave rolled in, the child lost footing and was on the verge of being dragged into the sea. Fortunately, an alert bystander standing nearby reacted swiftly, rushing into the surf to pull the child to safety. While the rescuer appeared visibly shaken by the close call, the parents—seemingly oblivious to what had just transpired—continued walking forward and smiling at the camera.
Backlash on Social Media
The couple's preoccupation with content creation at the expense of their child's safety prompted intense backlash online:
- Several users condemned the behavior, with one commenting that in many jurisdictions, such blatant neglect would warrant intervention by child protection authorities.
- Another user described the parents' actions as reckless, emphasizing that seeking online fame should never jeopardize a toddler's life while thanking the stranger whose quick intervention prevented a potential drowning.
- Commenters widely questioned the growing obsession with recording social media reels in public spaces, particularly in hazardous environments such as coastlines and waterfronts where immediate supervision is critical.
Reel makers should be banned from having children, they must be ostracised from the society https://t.co/CZCmmIkPe5
