Jhansi Teen Invents ₹1,800 'Desi AC' to Beat Scorching Heat: Prototype Lowers Room Temperature by 4–5°C

Jhansi (Uttar Pradesh):

In a country where intense summer heat makes life indoors grueling and commercial air conditioning remains an unaffordable luxury for millions, a 16-year-old student from Jhansi addressed the challenge by developing an ultra-low-cost cooling unit priced at just ₹1,800.

Kalyani Shrivastava, then a Class 12 student at Lokamanya Tilak Inter College, engineered the frugal innovation dubbed the 'Desi AC', utilizing accessible materials to provide relief to lower-income and rural households struggling with scorching temperatures and expensive electricity bills.

How the ₹1,800 'Desi AC' Functions:

Rather than relying on complex, energy-heavy refrigeration cycles, the portable cooling system utilizes a simple, resourceful mechanism:

  • Components: The unit is constructed using a thermocol icebox fitted with a 12-volt DC fan and an elbow-shaped outlet pipe.

  • Mechanism: Air is drawn into the ice-filled cooling chamber and expelled through the elbow outlet as chilled air.

  • Solar Integration: It was designed to run on solar power when linked to an appropriate solar setup, reducing reliance on conventional grid electricity.

  • Performance: Reports noted that the device could drop ambient room temperatures by approximately 4°C to 5°C after an hour of localized operation.

Innovation Driven by Bundelkhand’s Severe Summers:

Explaining the inspiration behind her project, Kalyani emphasized the harsh living conditions of her native region:

"For the people of Bundelkhand, it is not possible that everyone can afford an AC, and the heat is unbearable. So I got this idea and transformed it into a reality, which is being appreciated a lot."

Her experiment illustrated how grassroots innovation can emerge from everyday social realities rather than high-end laboratories.

National Recognition and Industrial Acclaim:

The device garnered widespread attention and high-profile endorsements. RPG Enterprises Chairman Harsh Goenka commended her on X (formerly Twitter):

"Kalyani Srivastava, a 16-year girl from Jhansi has emerged as a saviour for heat-stricken rural people. She has invented an eco-friendly air conditioner costing just Rs.1800, the cheapest in the world. Let’s encourage such talent!"

Kalyani's working model was selected for a national-level exhibition affiliated with IIT Delhi, and she was later honored with the Uttar Pradesh government's prestigious 'Naari Samman' award.

Accomplished Singer Beyond Science:

In addition to her technological pursuits, Kalyani demonstrated notable talent in the performing arts. She competed on the music reality show Indian Idol, advancing to the third round, and has accumulated over 50 trophies across regional singing contests in Lucknow, Agra, and Kanpur.
