Father Kills Son in Alcohol-Fueled Dispute in Chikkamagaluru

Chikkamagaluru: This tragic incident stands as a stark testimony to how far alcohol addiction can drive a person. A minor quarrel over liquor escalated into a horrifying tragedy where a father ended up murdering his own son. The incident occurred on Saturday night (January 3, 2026) in Anegundi village, Mudigere taluk, Chikkamagaluru district.

Ramesh Achar (aged around 65) hacked his son Pradeep Achar (29) to death with a sickle. A case has been registered at Baluru Police Station.

Both father and son were slaves to the habit of heavy drinking. Not only that, they would compete with each other, claiming superiority in consumption. Like close friends, they would sit together and argue stubbornly over who got more liquor and who got less. What began as a dispute over alcohol between the father and son ultimately ended in the son's murder.

The father, Ramesh, should have guided his grown son onto the right path and corrected him. Instead, he would make his son sit beside him and drink together, and now he has caused his son's death. Ramesh, a resident of Anegundi village near Baluru in Mudigere taluk, Chikkamagaluru district, had been addicted to alcohol since a young age. If he drank alone, it might not have mattered, but he started involving his son in drinking sessions.

After consuming liquor, the father and son would quarrel daily. Unable to bear the constant harassment from the drunken father and son, the mother, Manjula, had left the home earlier. With no woman in the house, it was just the two of them running the household unchecked. With no one to advise or control them, drinking from morning till evening had become their routine occupation.

On the day of the incident, they had sold arecanut and used the money to buy liquor, drinking heavily that night like a paired team. In their intoxicated state, a quarrel broke out over who got less liquor and who got more. During this argument, Ramesh attacked his son Pradeep with a sickle, killing him.

Only the father and son lived in the house. It is reported that they often quarreled over trivial matters while drunk. Unable to endure their ongoing fights, Pradeep's mother had left the home long ago.

Pradeep lay in a pool of blood the entire night, succumbing to severe blood loss. In the morning, Ramesh dragged his son's body out of the house. Neighbors who noticed this immediately informed the police. Upon receiving the information, Baluru police arrived at the spot and were shocked for a moment. After inspecting the scene, they arrested Ramesh. During interrogation, Ramesh confessed to killing his son over the liquor dispute.
