By the end of the second day of the 85th All India Inter-University Athletics Championship 2025-26, Mangalore University has secured a total of six medals, including one gold, four silver, and one bronze.

Mangalore University Winners:

  • Women's Section: 10,000m Run: Nirmala (First); 400m Hurdles: Deekshita Rama Gowda (Second).

  • Men's Section: 100m Run: Vibhaskar Kumar (Second); 400m Hurdles: Aryan Prajwal Kashyap (Second); 800m Run: Prathamesh Amarisla Diora (Second); Shot Put: Aniket (Third).

Mother ‘Chelvi’ Inspires Sam’s Record

Moodbidri: Sam Vasanth S. (10.39 sec) from Bharathiar University, Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu), set a new meet record to emerge as the fastest male sprinter of the ‘85th All India Inter-University Athletics Championship 2025-26’ on Tuesday. In the women’s category, Prathima Selvaraj (11.74 sec) of Madras University, Chennai, won the gold to become the fastest female sprinter.

These athletes became the center of attraction on Tuesday, the second day of the five-day championship organized by Alva’s Education Foundation in association with Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) at Swaraj Maidan.

Record Broken:

The meet record for the men's sprint was previously held by V.K. Elakkiya Dasan (10.41 sec) of Alva’s College (representing Mangalore University) in 2018. Sam Vasanth S. broke this record in the semifinals by clocking 10.39 seconds, qualifying him for the record books. He finished the final race in 10.44 seconds.

Victory Amidst Rain:

The weather in Moodbidri was humid and sunny from the morning, followed by a drizzle around 3:00 PM. Following the rain, Sam Vasanth, a B.Sc. Computer Science student from Kongunadu College, Coimbatore, won gold in the 100m race. Relieved and emotional, he displayed a message stating, "My coach Velu Murugan and my parents are the reason for my victory."

Sam Vasanth is the son of master sprinter champion Kalai Chelvi and spinning mill worker V. Subramanian. An emotional Sam said, "My coach Murugan observed my speed at the university and told me, 'You will set a record.' That gave me self-confidence. My father's support and my mother are my strength."

In the men's category, Vibhaskar Kumar of Mangalore University (student of Alva's College) secured second place, finishing in 10.54 seconds.

The fastest female sprinter, Prathima Selvaraj, is the daughter of a farming couple, Sumathi and Selvaraj, from Chennai. She is an M.A. Communication student at M.O.P. Vaishnav College for Women.

Walk Race Results:

In the 20km walk held at dawn, Vihvendra Singh (1:25:50.07) of RIMT University, Punjab, won gold in the men's section. Gayath Ganesh Choudhary (1:40:15.41) of Savitribai Phule University, Pune, won gold in the women's section.

Drug-Free India: Massive Walkathon & Organ Donation Awareness

Protecting Youth from Vices is Our Responsibility: Dr. Bhagavan

Moodbidri: "Protecting today's youth from bad habits is not just our choice, it is a necessity," said Dr. Bhagavan, Vice-Chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS).

He spoke after inaugurating the ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (Drug-Free India Campaign) and Organ Donation’ program organized in the city on Tuesday by the university in association with Alva’s Education Foundation as part of the 85th All India Inter-University Athletics Championship.

"To help youth become addiction-free, yoga and meditation programs will be launched in partnership with the Disha Bodha Foundation," he announced.

"Drug addiction pushes individuals into depression. It destroys life along with health," he noted, urging students to "Follow the principles of Swami Vivekananda for empowerment."

The program began with garlanding the statue of Rani Abbakka, followed by the National Anthem. A walkathon then proceeded from the Rani Abbakka Circle at Chowta's Palace to Swaraj Maidan.

Over 3,000 students from Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences and Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) participated under the aegis of Alva's Education Foundation. Vice-Chancellor Dr. Bhagavan administered the oath.

Dignitaries present included RGUHS Syndicate Member Dr. Iftikhar, Additional Chief Secretary of the Department of Health and Family Welfare (Govt of Karnataka) Mohammad Mohsin, SDME Society Vice President D. Surendra Kumar, University Registrar Arjun Odeyar, Alva's Education Foundation Managing Trustees Vivek Alva and Dr. Vinay Alva, and Shivangi Reddy and Jeetu Thomas from Disha Bodha Foundation.

The event concluded with the slogan, "Say No to Drugs, Say Yes to Life."
