Indian Govt Cracks Down on X: 3,500 Grok AI-Generated Pornographic Videos Blocked, 600 Accounts Deleted
NEW DELHI: The Government of India has taken a stern stand against Elon Musk-owned microblogging platform 'X'. Following strict warnings regarding the misuse of Grok AI to generate explicit content, X has blocked over 3,500 pornographic videos and permanently deleted more than 600 accounts in India that were involved in circulating such material.
Misuse of Grok AI and Government Intervention
The 'Grok AI' chatbot, integrated into the X platform, recently came under fire for its 'Imagine' feature. Users were reportedly using this AI tool to create non-consensual explicit images and deepfake videos. Taking serious note of this, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) issued a formal notice to X on January 2, demanding immediate control over AI misuse.
Compliance with Indian IT Laws
Under the prevailing Indian Information Technology rules, the government directed X to remove obscene and explicit content within a 72-hour window. In response, X has submitted a written assurance to the government, stating its commitment to following Indian laws. The platform has confirmed it will no longer allow Grok AI to be used for generating pornographic or adult content.
Global Backlash Against Grok AI
India is not alone in its concerns. Grok AI's ability to compromise privacy has triggered global outrage. Indonesia has already blocked the AI tool, while countries like Brazil, France, Germany, and Malaysia have initiated investigations. In the United States, lawmakers have even urged Google and Apple to remove the app from their respective stores due to safety concerns.
Commitment to Digital Safety
The Indian government remains firm that Artificial Intelligence should not be a tool for degrading societal standards or violating individual dignity. This crackdown is seen as a major step toward ensuring digital safety for women and citizens. Platforms are now under high scrutiny to ensure their AI models are not exploited for illegal or immoral activities.
