ICC U-19 World Cup 2026: Henil Patel’s Fifer and Kundu’s Calm Finish Guide India to Victory Against USA

Bulawayo, Zimbabwe: Defending champions India kicked off their ICC Under-19 World Cup 2026 campaign with a convincing 6-wicket victory (via DLS method) over the USA at the Queens Sports Club. While the rain caused a brief scare and revised the target, the young "Men in Blue" showed immense composure to secure their first points of the tournament.

Match Highlights: Henil Patel Rips Through USA

Opting to bowl first in overcast conditions, India’s right-arm pacer Henil Patel turned out to be the chief architect of the USA’s downfall. Patel's lethal opening spell saw him claim two wickets in a single over, leaving the American side reeling at 35/4. Despite a fighting 36 from Nitish Sudini, the USA were bundled out for just 107 in 35.2 overs.

The Chase: Rain Delay and Kundu’s Heroics

Following a heavy downpour, India’s target was revised to 96 runs in 37 overs under the DLS method. India had a shaky start, losing early wickets including captain Ayush Mhatre and the young prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi. However, wicketkeeper-batter Abhigyan Kundu anchored the chase with an unbeaten 42 off 41 balls, sealing the win with a massive six over long-on in the 18th over.

Key Player Profiles

  • Henil Patel (Player of the Match): The star of the day. His career-best Youth ODI figures of 5/16 showcased his ability to swing the ball both ways. His double-wicket maiden broke the momentum of the USA's middle order.

  • Abhigyan Kundu: Known for his aggressive yet stable batting, Kundu proved why he is the backbone of the middle order. His unbeaten 42 came at a strike rate of over 100, ensuring the DLS par score was never a concern.

  • Vaibhav Suryavanshi: At just 14 years old, Suryavanshi is the youngest player in the tournament history. Although he fell early in this match, he remains a "one to watch" for his record-breaking domestic form.

  • Nitish Sudini (USA): The lone warrior for the United States. His 36 runs provided some respectability to the total and showed great technique against India’s spin attack.
